Man Shot Protecting Religious Medallion from Mugger
Zahir Watts, 21, told his family he was on a downtown D train in Manhattan at 4 a.m. when the mugger “showed him that he had a weapon and told him, ‘Don’t make this hard,’” Watts’ stepfather said.
The mugger tried to rip the chain, which featured a silver-colored medallion of Jesus, from Watts’ neck - setting off a vicious struggle for control of the mugger’s .40-caliber gun, according to Watts’ stepfather, Bobby Richardson, and police sources.
“My stepson, he fought for his life,” said Richardson, 45.
The battle spilled onto a subway platform when the train pulled into the Seventh Ave./53rd St. station. Witnesses said the alleged mugger, Richard Mwazi, 24, shot Watts one time in the back and fled the station, police sources said.
